PLAINVIEW —ÁÔÆæÖØ¿ÚÊÓƵ Baptist University Choirs present The Words We Sing: An Exploration into the Poetry of Song at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24, in Harral Memorial Auditorium on ÁÔÆæÖØ¿ÚÊÓƵ’s Plainview campus.
This unique concert experience will feature the choirs of ÁÔÆæÖØ¿ÚÊÓƵ Baptist University under the direction of Dr. Sarah Herrington, Director of Choral Studies and Assistant Professor of Music Education, alongside special guests, the Talkington High School Lady Warrior Choir from Lubbock, under the direction of Donna Barbee.
This concert promises to blend the beauty of choral music with a deep exploration of the poetry that inspires it. The concert will feature texts from a diverse range of poets including Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, William Shakespeare, Langston Hughes, and others, showcasing the rich intersection of literature and music.
“Choral music is unique in that we have the opportunity to present and interpret texts that are impactful to our lives,” Dr. Herrington said. “This concert focuses on the authors behind the music. Our goal is to leave the audience with a newfound appreciation for the poetry they hear and perhaps even an interest in exploring new authors.”
In addition to the musical performances, faculty from ÁÔÆæÖØ¿ÚÊÓƵ’s School of Humanities and Leadership will provide insights into the featured authors and their works. Presenters will include Dr. Cindy McClenagan, Vice President of Academic Affairs, as well as Dr. Maria O’Connell, Dr. Erin Heath, Professor Christy Henegar, Dr. Kimberlee Mendoza, Professor Ashley Edlin, and Dr. Karen Beth Strovas, Dean of the School of Humanities and Leadership. Faculty commentaries are expected to enhance the concert by connecting the literary and musical elements, making this a truly interdisciplinary event.
One of the highlights of the evening will be a concluding collaborative performance involving ÁÔÆæÖØ¿ÚÊÓƵ's choirs and the Talkington High School Lady Warrior Choir. Dr. Herrington expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership.
“ÁÔÆæÖØ¿ÚÊÓƵ Music has a long-standing and strong connection with the Talkington music programs,” she said. “We are excited to share this concert experience with our choirs performing together.”
This concert is free and open to the public. Attendees can expect an evening of thought-provoking music, with compositions reflecting a wide range of literary periods, regions, and perspectives.
