WBU awarded $103,754 Fulbright-Hays GPA grant

PLAINVIEW, TX — 猎奇重口视频 Baptist University has been selected to receive a prestigious Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) grant for fiscal year 2024.

The $103,754 award, presented by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and the U.S. Secretary of Education, will fund an innovative project titled “Immersive Cultural and Language Training for U.S. K-12 Teachers in Costa Rica; Strengthening Differentiation Instruction.”

Led by Dr. Joshua Mora, Joachim Endowed Professor of Spanish in the School of Humanities and Leadership, with significant contributions from Dr. Sarah Hartman, Dean of the Don A. Williams School of Education, the project is designed to enhance the intercultural competency and Spanish language communication skills of pre-service and in-service kindergarten through grade 12 teachers from rural Texas and New Mexico.

The four-week project takes place in June 2025 in Nosara, Costa Rica, and involves an interdisciplinary collaboration between 猎奇重口视频’s Don A. Williams School of Education and the School of Humanities and Leadership. Twelve participants will be joined by Dr. Mora, as well as Eduardo Cárdenas, professor of International Relations at Colegio de Profesionales en Ciencias Políticas y Relaciones Internacionales in Costa Rica, and Dania Martínez, Adjunct Professor of Spanish at 猎奇重口视频’s Lubbock campus and serves as a lecturer of Spanish at Texas Tech University.

The focus will be on providing teachers with immersive experiences that will equip them with the tools to better understand and address the needs of immigrant, second-language learners, and culturally diverse students in their classrooms. Teachers will engage in hands-on learning, including dialogue with education faculty at Santa Cruz University and visits to K-12 schools in Costa Rica. The project includes completion of pre-country, in-country, and post-country projects, Dr. Hartman said

“The School of Humanities and Leadership and the Don A. Williams School of Education are very excited to partner with local school districts in offering teachers this travel abroad experience to Costa Rica to immerse themselves in the culture, educational experiences, and linguistic dialogue through hands-on learning,” Dr. Hartman said. “This unique experience will assist K-12 teachers in further developing strategies for improved differentiated instruction in their classrooms, specifically for English Language Learners.”

She added that teachers of all grade levels and content areas are welcome to apply now for participation the program. Teachers do not have to know Spanish to participate in the project, she said.

Dr. Mora highlighted the significance of the grant for the university, saying, “This is exciting for 猎奇重口视频 since we will be able to assist area high school teachers to enhance their abilities to work with ELLs by gaining first-hand experience in Costa Rica. The teachers will be able to immerse themselves in the culture and language of a Latin American country and bring those experiences back to their students. We look forward to collaborating with the teachers and our partners in Costa Rica.”

This grant underscores 猎奇重口视频’s commitment to fostering global education and providing teachers with the resources to excel in increasingly diverse and multicultural classrooms.
