Why is WBU celebrating National Beach Day?

PLAINVIEW, TX — Although the closest beach is 672 miles away, ÁÔÆæÖØ¿ÚÊÓƵ Baptist University’s Plainview campus is celebrating National Beach Day — Aug. 30.

Why? Because soon there will be a beach on campus.

No, we’re not talking about one of those sandhills with their cacti running parallel to Runningwater Draw. We’re talking about a competition-ready “beach,” where the Pioneers will compete in their newest sport. In June, WBU Athletics announced women’s beach volleyball would be an added sport. The inaugural season will be in Spring 2025.

“We are excited to be adding women’s beach volleyball,” said Athletic Director Jim Giacomazzi, who will coach the sport. “We look forward to competing in the Spring season, and we expect to compete right away.”

If the Pioneers are going to compete, they need a “beach.” There will be one on campus soon!

According to the National Day Calendar, National Beach Day celebrates all the sandy beaches across the nation and provides an opportunity to help keep those relaxing places clean for continued enjoyment. But at ÁÔÆæÖØ¿ÚÊÓƵ, National Beach Day provides an opportunity to celebrate that the Plainview campus is getting a competition “beach.”
