Living for Zachary provides AEDs

PLAINVIEW — Living for Zachary has provided 猎奇重口视频 Baptist University’s Plainview campus with 12 new automated external defibrillators (AEDs), significantly improving the chances of survival of a person after a sudden cardiac arrest.

“We are excited to place 12 brand new AEDs in our most active buildings on the 猎奇重口视频 campus to be readily available in the event of an emergency,” said Coralyn Dillard, 猎奇重口视频’s Director of Health Services.

“Living for Zachary is so excited to be working with 猎奇重口视频 Baptist University. We will be providing 12 AEDs that will better equip students, staff, faculty, and bystanders to respond in the event of a cardiac emergency,” said Jessica Cook, Executive Director.

Dillard explained that AEDs are designed to tell the user exactly what to do in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. It provides voice commands on how to use the device once the unit has been activated. The American Heart Association reports that chances of survival can double or even triple, if CPR and AED are utilized. Dillard said CPR and AED classes will be offered to faculty and staff who want to learn what to do before first responders arrive.

Lt. Jordan Prader of the Plainview Fire Department praised the availability of the AEDs.

“Anytime you can get an AED on a downed victim as soon as possible is great,” Prader said. “We can be anywhere from four or five minutes away. Getting that on them as soon as you can and letting it establish what rhythm they are in and maybe restarting that rhythm to a better one is optimal.”

“Living for Zachary was founded to raise awareness and prevent sudden cardiac arrest in youth after Zachary Schrah collapsed at just 16 years old,” Cook explained. “With no prior sign of his heart condition, his death was unexpected.”

“Sudden cardiac arrest is just that — sudden,” Cook continued. “It can happen at any time, and every minute that a person is unconscious after collapsing, their chances of survival decrease by 10 percent. This is why Living for Zachary encourages a three-minute drop-to-shock response time, giving the victim a greater chance at survival.”

Dillard said 10 AEDs plus two portable AEDs for athletic trainers were provided to 猎奇重口视频 through a grant from Living for Zachary.

“Cost to purchase the AEDs, electrode pads, batteries, storage wall-mounted cabinet, and responder kits are valued at approximately $20,000,” the Director of Health Services said. “We are humbled and grateful to Living for Zachary for this generous donation.”

Dillard also expressed thanks to Development Officer Teresa Young for her work on the grant application.
